On September 3, at Yakub Kolas Square was held a Rally in support of education in Belarusian.
The letters say "khocham vuchytsa pa-belarusku" (we want to study in Belarusian)
The tradition of such rallies in the first day of the school year existed in 2004-2006, reminds generation.by.
To the first major event "We want to study in Belarusian" in 2004 at Oktyabrskiy Square attended about 200 people; of course, some people were eventually arrested. In the following year, a new generation of student activists has gathered about 60 students at Yakub Kolas Square. The students had formed the words "We want to study in Belarusian". Both rallies ended with a bard concert in the park of Yanka Kupala.
This year, there appeared an initiative group, which revives once influential organization called "Zadzіnochane Belaruskih Studentau". It was this group that held the rally in support of Belarusian language at Yakub Kolas Square.
According to the National Statistics Committee, 164 000 of Belarusian students study in Belarusian and in Russian at the same time. However, only 0.9% or 4,200 university students are able to study completely in Belarusian.
