Unregistered presidential candidate Valery Tsepkalo has written an open letter to 32 world leaders. He called on them to back free and fair elections in Belarus, TV Rain channel reports.
The letter is addressed to US President Donald Trump, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and other world leaders.
The former diplomat particularly urges politicians to “support free and fair presidential elections in Belarus and draw public attention to the anti-people policy of the Belarusian regime.”
Tsepkalo stresses that the Belarusian authorities are “actively preventing fair and free presidential elections by exerting force on all those who want a fair and transparent electoral process.”
“On behalf of the entire Belarusian people, I ask for assistance in organizing international monitoring of elections and vote counting, and ensuring transparency of the electoral process for the citizens of Belarus residing in your free country.
Our peoples are united by their cultural and historical heritage and close kinship ties. We equally understand the ideas of democracy and freedom,” the letter says.
Tsepkalo explains that the opposition’s goals include holding transparent elections, electing Svetlana Tikhanovskaya as president, freeing all political prisoners, and holding new elections within the next three to six months with the participation of all alternative candidates.
Recall that the Central Election Commission of Belarus refused to register Valery Tsepkalo as a presidential candidate. He later filed a complaint with the Supreme Court against the CEC’s decision to refuse registration. However, the Supreme Court decided to leave the decision of the CEC unchanged.
At the end of July Valery Tsepkalo left Belarus with two children after he had been allegedly warned about an order for his arrest and their kids to be removed from the family. Belarus’ presidential election is set for 9 August.
