Election for House of Representatives to be held on November 17
Alyaksandr Lukashenka, by his August 5 presidential edict, scheduled an election for the House of Representatives for November 17.

The edict requires the central election commission to conduct the election and ensure that it is held in compliance with electoral regulations, said the presidential press office.

The election will take place almost 10 months before the expiry of the term of the current House of Representatives, as the government seeks a long interval between the parliamentary ballot and next year’s presidential election.

Mr. Lukashenka, by another edict that he also signed on August 5, directed that an election for the Council of the Republic be held on November 7.

According to the edict, local soviets and executive committees are to conduct the nomination of candidates for the Council of the Republic on October 8 at the latest.

The edicts task the Council of Ministers with providing public funds for the conduct of both elections.

Elections for the Council of the Republic are held at meetings of members of the base-level local soviets (elected councils) in each of Belarus’ six regions and at a meeting of the Minsk City Soviet.

The Council of the Republic, a chamber of territorial representation, has 64 seats. Eight members of the Council of the Republic are appointed by the president of the Republic of Belarus, while the remaining 56 members, eight members from each region and the city of Minsk, are elected for four-year terms by secret ballot on the basis of equal and indirect suffrage at meetings of members of the base-level local soviets in the area.
