Lukashenko Reproaches EU And US For Not Helping Belarus Fight COVID-19
“These Europeans and Americans are sleazy people. They have done anything to help us. Although both the WHO and the UN keep saying that it is necessary to provide support and so on. Well, they did not help and we are fine with it, we do not ask them about it. But they decided to tighten the screws, to worsen the situation here [probably meaning sanctions – Ed.]. The main thing is that we have treated and will continue to treat our people. And, God willing, we got rid of this problem, as now it is being eliminated. And we could treat people with [healthcare workers getting – Ed.] bonuses: so that we support those doctors who work in the “red zones” with covid patients,” said Lukashenko (quoted from the video of the Pul Pervy telegram channel).

EU aid to Belarus

The EU Delegation in Belarus told TUT.BY that, within the framework of the Solidarity for Health project funded by the EU, 3,8 million dollars were spent for the purchase of personal protective equipment, medical and diagnostic equipment for Belarus during the year.

Last June within the framework of the EU initiative to combat the pandemic in the Eastern Partnership countries, Belarus received humanitarian aid. It included 3.6 million protective equipment, including 2.3 million masks, 1 million respirators, 50,000 face shields, 50,000 goggles and 80,000 medical gowns [purchased with funds from the EU]. This April, within the framework of the Solidarity for Health project funded by the EU, the WHO country office delivered oxygen masks with a reservoir to Minsk, devices for high-flow nasal oxygen therapy, rapid tests to diagnose COVID-19 totalling $850,000.

As Head of the EU Delegation in Belarus Dirk Schuebel noted at the ceremony of transferring the cargo, “assistance to Belarus will continue, and the total volume of equipment supplied to the republic has already reached $ 5.3 million”. Another example is the support of the National Airport Minsk in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of the USAID-funded WHO Preparedness and Response Support for the COVID-19 Pandemic Project, Minsk Airport received thermal imagers, COVID-19 individual and collective protective equipment, and disinfectants.

Recall that Poland, as part of the fight against coronavirus, provided Belarus with the largest humanitarian aid in its history. Last June 40 trucks brought 300 tons of equipment and protective equipment: ventilators, medicines, several million protective and medical disposable masks, antiseptics, protective coveralls, biosecurity overalls, shields, PCR tests. Last April Poland donated to Belarus disinfectants (50 thousand litres), antiseptics (30 thousand litres) and surgical masks (100 thousand pieces) necessary to fight COVID-19.
