Sanctions as an obstacle to investments
But a lot of Belarusian enterprises are barred from cooperation with U.S. firms. Another set of sanctions was imposed in 2011, which was triggered by brutal crackdown on the peaceful protests after the 2010 presidential elections.
The sanctions touched frtilizer producer Hrodna Azot, car tires producer Belshyna, Naftan refinery, synthetic fiber factory Hrodna Chimvalakno. American citizens are forbidden to conduct any financial and trade transactions with the listed companies, and all their assets in American banks were frozen.
All four companies are part of Belnaftachim corporation which was subjected to sanctions in November 2007. The sanctions are meant to target persons and enterprises accused of violating human rights, political repressions and corruption.
