Belarus authorities expect for medical tourism boom

President Lukashenka promised a pay rise to health workers. According to him, it could be increased with the help of a rise in the export of health services.

However, our country can not boast of their particularity; the only advantage of the Belarusian health care is low prices, physician Ivan Shega told Belsat TV.

Due to limited financing our health management has been agonizing, he believes. “Free healthcare is passing into history,” Mr Shega stressed. Imposing services on a fee-paying basis is a reaction to the deplorable state of the national system of public health service.

The authorities have never taken healthcare reform measures fearing the people’s response to such an unpopular step, he points out. It should be noted that Belarusian health professionals often carry the burden of social workers’ offices, e.g. visitation of the sick, driving seniors to health centres, etc. But healthcare reforms are inevitable, Ivan Shega said.
