Swine fever detected near Belarusian border in Lithuania

An emergency state has been declared in Šalčininkai District in Lithuania due to African swine fever.

After two cattle that were held in the area died, the Lithuanian veterinarians conducted research an claimed that the cause of death was African swine fever.

“If the situation does not change, if new areas of disease are not detected in the area, or if the disease does not emerge in the neighboring farms, we will evaluate the situation again and cancel it,” said the head of the Veterinary Service of the Šalčininkai district.

Šalčininkai district is situated in the zone where farmers since 2015 have not had the right to raise pigs without special protective measures assessed by veterinary specialists.

Recently, a “Belsat” TV crewreceived a complaint of the Zyalionyia Luki villagers and took a trip to a local pig farm called “Dobraya Hryushka”.
