The Ministry of Information has commented on the ban of Tor, a network providing anonymous access to the Internet. It has been done to restrict access to blacklisted websites, officials told BELTA.

Internet service providers must restrict the access to blacklisted websites, officials noted. Various proxy-servers and anonymous networks like Tor allow users to access blocked websites. According to the Belarusian laws, such instruments must be blocked.

"The goal is not to block anonymous access to the Internet. It is necessary to restrict access to resources contained forbidden information. The access to such websites is restricted according to the Belarusian legislation,” officials of the Ministry of information announced.

The same practice is used in many other countries, the Ministry noted.

Users encountered problems when trying to access Tor at the beginning of December, Euroradio reported. As a result, the number of Belarusian users for Tor has already reduced by half.
