In the presence of the presidents of Russia and Kazakhstan Aliaksandr Lukashenka has spoken out on the state sovereignty: his words might well be filed under treason crimes.
There is no need to fear to delegate more power onto the supranational level, he stated. "Sovereignty is not an icon. Money talks, and if we want to live better we should drop something and offer up some sacrifice. The only thing that counts is our people's well-being," the head of state said during the session of the Eurasian Economic Community on October 24, 2013.
According to the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus, it is the people of the country who is the only source of power and holder of sovereignty. The law prohibits any acting of political bodies and authorities if these acts are stacked against the state sovereignty. Article 256 of the Criminal Code carries a punishment of up to 15 years' of imprisonment for crimes against sovereignty.
