The Belarusian People’s Front (BPF) will nominate its Deputy Chairman Alyaksei Yanukevich for taking part in the 2020 presidential election.

“As back as 2017, at the party congress, we opted for participating in the elections. We decided that I would become the main candidate and Yuras Zyankovich would be my backup. But later, in course of negotiations, the party <…> took an ultimate decision that the BPF would campaign and that I will be the single candidate,” Yanukevich told Belsat TV.

Politicians and activists Alena Anisim, Hanna Kanapatskaya, Volha Kavalkova, Tatsyana Karatkevitch, Mikalai Statkevich, Mikalai Kazlou and Aleh Haydukevich announced their running for presidency in August, 2020. The first and still the only Belarusian president Alyaksandr Lukashenka also intends to be part of the presidential race.

According to him, the Belarusian opposition is mulling over putting forward a single candidate.

“We do not deny that the idea of democratic forces’ proposing a single candidate may be wise. We are holding consultations with our colleagues about whether we will be able to work out some kind of procedure of selecting [a single candidate] and agree on a joint participation. If such an agreement is reached, I will be part of it as a representative of the BPF. If not, the BPF will take part in the elections on our own,” the politician added.
