Top official proposes to hold presidential election on Lukashenka’s birthday
The next presidential election in Belarus may be held on 30 August 2020, Lidziya Yarmoshyna, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC), told journalists. Interestingly, the incumbent president was born on August, 30.

“The Constitution requires that [a presidential election] has to happen at least two months before the term of office expires. In other words, 30 August 2020 is the last day that fits,” state-run news agency BelTA quotes Yarmoshyna.

According to her, as September, 1 is the start of an academic year, on August, 30 all the educational institutions where polling stations are located will be open.

Last week Alyaksandr Lukashenka shed light on the dates of holding the presidential and parliamentary elections in 2019-2020 when delivering the State of the Nation Address to the Belarusian people and the National Assembly. The exact dates of the two campaigns have been wrapped in mystery for long. In February, Lidziya Yarmoshyna said that it was still unknown whether the parliamentary or presidential campaign would kick off in the autumn of 2019.

In particular, Lukashenka decided to schedule the parliamentary election for a day close to 7 November 2019, when another anniversary of the so-called October revolution is marked.
