Members of the Free Trade Union, who were dismissed from the plant of tractor parts and units in Babruisk, have begun a hunger strike.
Four protesters announced they went on a hunger strike in the building of the Babruisk city administration at 10 a.m. on November 5. The activists plan to spend the first day of the strike in the building, Radio Svaboda reports.
The trade union members say the hunger strike will last two days. They want to attract public attention to the harassment of members of the Free Trade Union at the plant of tractor parts and units.
“We want the authorities to hear our problems. We appealed to many officials, but they ignore us. So, we decided to protest,” activist Aleh Shauchenka said.
The trade union members went on a hunger strike as they didn't receive an answer to their open letter to Aliaksandr Lukashenka. They asked the head of state to deal with the unlawful dismissals of members of the Free Trade Union.
The workers wrote in the letter that the administration dismissed experienced specialists and thus harmed the production process. They lay blame for their dismissal on plant director Aliaksandr Ahranovich who, they think, “declared a war against the free trade union”.
Members of the Free Trade Union already had a three-day hunger strike in March, but failed to achieve any results. The plant administration began to dismiss the protesters after the strike.
