If NATO increases military activity near the border of the Belarusian-Russian Union State, Russia and Belarus will have to respond adequately, Russian Ambassador Aleksandr Surikov told reporters in Minsk on Wednesday.

“If NATO deploys military bases near the border, Russia will have to respond to this,” Mr. Surikov said. “And Belarus will be concerned about [NATO’s] military activity near its southern border. If Ukraine takes such steps [bids to join NATO], this will be followed by adequate actions on the part of both Russia and Belarus.”

Mr. Surikov expressed hope that NATO would listen to reason. “The world is already flooded with weapons,” he added.
