Opposition politician Viktar Hanchar and businessman Anatol Krasouski disappeared without a trace in Minsk on September 16, 1999. They were last seen near the bathhouse in Fabrycnaja Street, 20 on the evening of September 16 when getting into Krasouski’s Jeep Cherokee.
Before joining the opposition, Hanchar was in Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s team and helped him get to power. Krasouksi was a his friend.
Minsk Public Prosecutor’s Office started a criminal case in 1999. Fragments of broken headlights, skid marks and traces of collision with a tree were found. Blood belonging to Hanchar (99.6% chance) was also discovered there.
The data was analyzed and investigators came to the conclusion that Hanchar and Krasouski had been abducted. It was a political abduction and higher officials were connected with it, oppositionists and the two men’s relatives insist.
Opposition politician, ex-Minister of Internal Affairs Yury Zakharanka disappeared four months before the abduction of Hanchar and Krasouski – on May 7, 1999. He also used to be a member of Lukashenka’s team. A murder invesitgation case was started and has not been closed ever since, BelaPAN reports.
