Belarus may consider the possibility of gradually increasing the pension age starting from January 1, 2017, Minister of Labour Mariana Shchotkina announced after a meeting with the President on March 10. The final decision will be made after a broad debate, BELTA quotes the official.
Three variants of the pension age increase were suggested to Lukashenka. Women may retire at 60 and men – at 65. This is the best variant for the economy because it ‘results in good performance’, Shchotkina thinks. The second variant suggests retirement for women at the age of 60 and for men – at 63. The third variant is 58 and 63 years respectively.
This is only a suggestion and it was discussed with Alyaksandr Lukashenka for the first time, Mariana Shchotkina stressed. “People’s opinion must be taken into account”, he said.
More than half of Belarusians do not support the idea of increasing the pension age, Lukashenka noted at the meeting.
