Alyaksandr Lukashenka is scheduled to meet with top government officials on November 15 to discuss police reform plans, Interior Minister Ihar Shunevich said on Monday.
He said that there would be no revolutionary reforms but only well-considered measures aimed at improving the performance of the police.
"The police serve the people and in the name of the people, these phrases must be filled with real, practical content without any pomp," the minister said.
Mr. Shunevich noted that measures were in the pipeline to "involve the public in the police's work."
The reform plans envisage, among other measures, the establishment of public councils under the aegis of the interior ministry and district police departments, the development of a new code of honor for police officers, and a revised approach to personnel recruitment and training.
The reform is expected to make the performance of the police more efficient, fruitful and better suited for present-day challenges and threats, Mr. Shunevich said.
