Anatol Lyabedzka, leader of the United Civic Party, continues his hunger strike in the detention center of the Committee for State Security (KGB), the politician's lawyer Iryna Burak told BelaPAN.

The defense counsel met with Mr. Lyabedzka on December 24. "He continues his hunger strike. According to Anatol Uladzimiravich, he was seen by a council of doctors who found his condition satisfactory," she said.

Ms. Burak said that she planned to meet her client again before December 30.

Mikalay Statkevich, another opposition politician held in the KGB detention center, is also believed to remain on hunger strike. As the former presidential candidate's defense counsel, Tatsyana Stankevich, told BelaPAN, she has not met her client since December 21. "I haven't met him since the first interrogation. It's very hard to get there [the KGB detention center]. I want to see him this week but I don't know what will be. I believe he's still on hunger strike," she said.

Messrs. Statkevich and Lyabedzka went on hunger strike and refused to speak during interrogations after their arrest on the night between December 19 and 20.
