The European Parliament, in its October 7 resolution, called on Belarus and the United States to introduce a moratorium on the death penalty.

The resolution, which was adopted to mark the eighth World Day Against the Death Penalty, noted that Belarus remained the only European nation still applying capital punishment despite repeated calls from the European Union and the Council of Europe to stop the practice.

The resolution pointed to a lack of information about executions in Belarus and expressed concern over whether the country's death row convicts receive a fair trial.
The European Parliament stressed in the resolution that in Belarus a death row convict's family is not given back the body after the execution and is not told where the person has been buried.
