The high-ranking police officer is charged with drug trafficking.
According to Interfax-Zapad news agency, this information was spread Tuesday evening by Lietuvos Rytas TV.
As it is reported, Belarusian customs officers detained Laimonas Bankauskas, the Vilnius Mounted Police chief, close to the Lithuanian border in Ashmyany district (Belarus) on Monday afternoon.
Representative of Ashmyany customs office confirm the fact of detention of the Lithuanian policeman on the Belarusian-Lithuanian border.
"Laimonas Bankauskas, the Vilnius Mounted Police chief, was detained by officers of the Ashmyany customs house on Monday afternoon. Narcotic drugs were found during the search of the vehicle he was going to use to enter Belarus," Interfax-Zapad learnt from Uladzimir Danilevich, the head of the smuggling department of the Ashmyany customs house.
According to him, Bankauskas planned to enter Belarus as a private citizen. He was seized 45.5 grams of amphetamine. The Hrodna region department of the State Security Committee (KGB) is to launch investigation over the fact.
The Embassy of Lithuania in Belarus was given official information on Tuesday evening, lrytas.lt notes.
Laimonas Bankauskas was placed in a remand prison in Hrodna.
Lithuanian Ambassador to Belarus Edminas Bagdonas said the high-ranking policeman was accused of smuggling and illegal drug possession. The Embassy officers have asked for a meeting with the detainee.
According to the Ambassador, the family of the detained official "denies the charges and says even drugs were really found they had been planted on him".
