Man Arrested After Five People Die in Car-truck Crash

A 60-year-old man who is suspected of being at fault in last week's vehicle crash that claimed the lives of five people has been taken into custody.

A 51-year-old man, his wife, daughter, son and granddaughter were killed on June 12 after their BMW was hit by the man's Volkswagen and sent into oncoming traffic where it crashed into an Iveco truck.
The accident happened in the Lahoysk district, Minsk region.

As Tatsyana Kalinina, senior aide to the Minsk regional prosecutor, told BelaPAN, the man, a Minsk resident, is to be charged with committing a violation of traffic rules that led to the death of more than one person under Article 317 of the Criminal Code.

A representative of the State Traffic Police Inspectorate said that the Volkswagen had winter tires at the time of the accident.

The Volkswagen driver attempted to flee the scene but had to stop some 300 meters away due to a damaged wheel.
