The population of Belarus totaled 9,473,600 people as of April 1, or 13,400 less than a year before, according to the National Statistics Committee.
These data are based on current statistics and preliminary findings of the 2009 General Census, the Committee noted.
The nation's population reportedly decreased by 13,000 to 9,480,200 people in 2009.
As of April 1, 1,837,300 people resided in the city of Minsk, up from 1,812,500 on the same date in 2009, the Committee said.
The population of each of Belarus' six regions decreased year-on-year: from 1,440,800 to 1,437,000 in the Homyel region, from 1,425,500 to 1,417,300 in the Minsk region, from 1,402,300 to 1,397,800 in the Brest region, from 1,234,100 to 1,226,300 in the Vitsyebsk region, from 1,098,800 to 1,089,800 in the Mahilyow region and from 1,073,000 to 1,068,100 in the Hrodna region.
As many as 26,139 babies were born, 748 less than in the first three months of 2009. A total of 35,261 people died, 239 less.
Migration-related population growth totaled 2,540 persons, with 4,148 people moving to Belarus and 1,608 emigrating from it.
The number of divorces reportedly fell by 2.1 percent year-on-year to 8,520 and that of new marriages by 18.4 percent to 11,448.
