Belarusian Photographer Becomes 2020 World Press Photo Finalist

Photographer from Belarus Tatsiana Tkachova became one of the finalists of the World Press Photo international photo contest.
The World Press Photo of the Year honors the photographer whose visual creativity and skills made a picture that captures or represents an event of great journalistic importance.
The prize is considered the most prestigious international award for photojournalism. Tatsiana Tkachova was nominated for a series of portraits titled Between Law and Shame.
In her project, Belarusian women who have considered abortion tell their stories. Their decisions were often made with difficulty and they wanted to stay anonymous.

The women had a range of concerns – from contamination after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster to fears of poverty, raising a child as a single parent or sexual abuse background.
The main focus of Tatsiana’s projects is gender violence, conflict and resistance. She works with local and foreign media such as Imena, Takie Dela, The Guardian, Der Spiegel Online, and others.
The 2020 World Press Photo of the Year saw 4,282 photographers from 125 countries enter 73,996 images. The nominees number 44 from 24 countries.
Protest and the role of youth in triggering change, environmental stories and population migrations around the planet are prominent image subjects this year.
