The investigation into the death of conscript soldier Alyaksandr Korzhych is under the personal supervision of Alyaksandr Lukashenka, the Belarusian leader’s spokesperson Natallya Eysmant told reporters in Minsk on Friday.

The 21-year-old native of Pinsk, Brest region, was found hanged in the basement of a building at the Belarusian Armed Forces’ 72nd United Training Center in Pechy near Barysaw, Minsk region, on October 3.

Authorities said that an initial investigation found no signs of foul play and yielded evidence suggesting that the soldier committed suicide, but Alyaksandr’s family and friends insist that he was murdered. They say that he had repeatedly complained before his death about bullying.

“Appropriate officials have been ordered to probe the case in the most thorough manner and provide impartial conclusions,” Ms. Eysmant said. “Alyaksandr Lukashenka receives reports on the progress of investigative activities literally several times a day. Believe me, the president’s stance on this issue is so severe that nobody will escape punishment.”
