Belarusians will start receiving biometric passports and ID-cards from 1 January, 2019.

E-passports will contain an electronic chip with personal data of the document owner – photo, digital signature, and fingerprints, the head of the Department on Citizenship and Migration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Aleksei Begun told the media.

“On 1 January, 2019 we will introduce biometric passports and ID cards,” the official said.

Biometric passports will allow Belarusians to pass border control faster.

Besides, digital documents are one of the EU’s requirements to simplify the visa regime between Belarus and the Schengen countries.

Citizens of Belarus will use e-passports mainly to go abroad. Meanwhile, an ID-card will serve as an internal document – like in many European states.

It will not be necessary to exchange paper passports for digitals documents at once, the official added. Both passports will be valid for a certain period of time.
