Travelers from 20+ countries visit Belarusian Grodno visa-free since October

Over 300 visa-free tourists landed in Grodno region for Christmas and New Year holidays. Overall, more than 2.2 thousand foreigners visited the region since the introduction of visa-free entry.
From 26 December 2016 to 1 January 2017, 180 persons – citizens of Poland, Italy, Belgium, Germany and Ireland – crossed the Belarusian-Polish border visa-free through Bruzgi checkpoint.
Over 140 foreigners from Lithuania, Spain, Norway, the United Kingdom and Estonia came through Privalka checkpoint at the Belarusian-Lithuanian border.
According to the officials, most of the visitors are citizens of the neighboring Lithuania and Poland.
“The geography of visa-free travelers is expanding. Over 2200 foreigners from 25 countries have visited Grodno and its surroundings visa-free since 26 October 2016,” Belarus border officials noted.
Foreigners are interested in cultural and historic sites both in Grodno and Grodno region. Travel agencies report their growing interest in Belarusian culture and say that after visiting Grodno region some tourists apply for a regular Belarusian visa to continue exploring other parts of the country.
Visa-free entry to the recreation park Augustow Canal that spans over a big part of the region including Grodno was introduced on 26 October 2016. Foreign nationals are allowed to spend up to 5 days on its territory with a special permit that is requested from travel agencies.
A special website on visa-free travel to the park and a map with tourist sights, information for travelers and the list of tour operators has been launched.
To promote travel to the region, Grodno region officials have opened a tourist info centre in the Polish Bialystok in November 2016 and plan to launch another one in Lithuania in January.
