Syarhei Ablameyka believes that his institution excellently copes with the role.

There is no need to create In Belarus a new university that would take over the function of the national one. This opinion was expressed in an interview with the BelaPAN agency by the rector of the Belarusian State University Syarhei Ablameyka.

According to him, being a leading institution of higher education of the country, the Belarusian State University excellently copes with the role of the National University. "We carry out the same functions as the leading universities of our neighbors - Moscow and St. Petersburg State University, although there is no word national in their names, apart from the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, but this status is implied," said Rector.

Mr Ablameyka notes that the creation of a new university requires a lot of time and effort. In addition, the teaching staff is an important issue, too.

The issue of the National University became actively discussed after the American David Polik became the rector of the European Humanities University. Representatives of the Belarusian intelligentsia then stated that Belarus needs a new national university.
