United Civic Party (UCP) leader Anatol Lyabedzka was arrested as he and fellow activists handed out a bulletin at the entrance to tire plant Belshyna in Babruysk, Mahilyow region, on August 14.

Mr. Lyabedzka and Viktar Buzinayew, head of the UCP chapter in the city, were brought to a police station. Their mobile phones were switched off at 7 p.m.

"We talked to plant workers, passed out a bulletin focusing on privatization and corruption. Everything was OK. Police officers turned up, wrote down our passport data," Mr. Lyabedzka told BelaPAN minutes before his arrest.

He said that a police lieutenant colonel and a police major were ordering him and Mr. Buzinayew to follow them to a police station. "According to them, we may be on the wanted list, although we have produced identification documents," Mr. Lyabedzka said.
