There is an urgent need to reform and liberalize Belarus’ media regulations, Dunja Mijatović, the OSCE representative on freedom of the media, said while meeting with members of the country’s lower parliamentary chamber, the House of Representatives in Minsk.

"I say this with full respect of the Belarusian authorities, but at the same time, my role it to emphasize and remind the authorities of their OSCE media freedom commitments," she said.

Ms. Mijatović stressed that her office had earlier made a legal evaluation of Belarus’ Media Law, and that the law should be revised. She expressed hope that members of the House of Representatives would use their "expertise in order to push media reforms in a right direction".

Dunja Mijatović arrived in Belarus for a three-day official visit. She is meeting with high-ranking Belarusian officials, leaders of the Belarusian Association of Journalists and the pro-government Belarusian Union of Journalists, journalists and civil society activists.
