757 million 526 thousand 717 Belarusian rubles (about 90 thousand dollars) collected by human rights defenders, civil society activists and simply by people indifferent to Ales Byalyatski's fate didn't help the head of the Human Rights Centre "Viasna" to go at large.
As UDF.BY reported earlier, on January 24 the Minsk City Court saw no grounds to reduce the sentence of the human rights defender.
"Why the compensation of damage, that Ales Byalyatski caused by his activity, didn't bring any results? With this question is better to go to court", the lawyer Vladimir Labkovich commented on the decision to UDF.BY.
According to him, all human rights defenders and civil society representatives were very surprised and outraged by today's court decision.
"This fact clearly shows a political motivation of Byalyatski's sentence , that in our country everybody don't give a damn about the legal justification", Labkovich said.
He noted, when human rights defenders began the campaign to raise funds for the head of "Viasna", everyone hoped that "reason will prevail" and Byalyatski will be released.
"Despite the regular celebration of absurd, which we saw today, I think one need to use any chances, and loopholes to release political prisoners.
757 million rubles, which were given to the regime, won't save it, as it continues by its own actions to drive itself into a pit of lawlessness and illegality. According to our information, Ales Byalyatski is not under pressure so that he will write an appeal for pardon.
The Human Rights Center "Viasna" will continue its work. While there is a possibility, we will work in the old office. But the search for a new one has already begun", Labkovich said.
