"In the foreground comes the question: not when will be the campaign, but what kind of campaign it will be", thus the chairman of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka commented to UDF.BY on the appeared information in the Russian newspaper "Kommersant" about the possibility of early parliamentary elections in Belarus.
According to experts of the publication, planning to hold early elections, President Aleksandr Lukashenka hopes to avoid pressure from the West, demanding from him the democratization of the electoral legislation.
"For us the issue of time is not so urgent as the question: will it be real elections or another appointment. If there are elections in accordance with OSCE standards, already tomorrow we are ready to propose people in at least 70 election districts. The UCP has two lists: the list for participation in true elections, and the list for participation in the campaign with no rules. They differ very significantly, both quantitatively and qualitatively. For the state power the issue when to hold elections is not so urgent now. Of course, they can be held during the New Year holidays, when all the people get drunk and don't care about any elections. So, a choice between elections in winter or autumn next year is for the authorities the choice between bad and very bad. Anyway, in this period won't be improve in the economic situation", Anatol Lyabedzka said in the interview with UDF.BY.
