Ukraine may withdraw Belarusian sugar from market if sugar refined from cane is supplied

The Ukrainian government may withdraw Belarusian sugar from the domestic market if there are new deliveries of sugar refined fro sugar cane instead of sugar refined from beets, Ambassador Roman Bezsmertnyi told reporters in Minsk on Wednesday.

According to him, the Ukrainian agriculture ministry is probing Belarusian sugar exports for compliance with bilateral agreements.

The restrictive measures that Ukraine may take would be sanctions on the part of the World Trade Organization member states even though Belarus is not a member of the WTO, the ambassador said.

Mr. Bezsmertnyi also said that the application of quantitative quotas to the import of Ukrainian beer into Belarus is a "matter of relations between the Ukrainian exporters and their Belarusian partners, not between the governments of the two countries."
