The United Democratic Forces (UDF) consistently advocates nominating a single candidate to represent all opposition forces in the 2011 presidential election, UDF Co-chairman Syarhey Kalyakin told BelaPAN.
On April 14, the coalition's board considered a proposal by the Rada (Council) of the Belarusian Intelligentsia regarding a mechanism for nominating such a candidate, said Mr. Kalyakin, leader of the "Spravedlivy Mir" (Just World) Belarusian Party of the Left.
"The coalition welcomes any suggestions of this kind," he said. "However, a nomination mechanism would be useless unless those who have already announced their presidential bids first agreed that the opposition needs it."
The UDF therefore invites all potential candidates to hold talks on this issue, Mr. Kalyakin said. The coalition's proposal to conduct nationwide primaries to select a single contender has been ignored, he noted.
