The United Democratic Forces (UDF), Belarus’ major opposition coalition, will hold a nationwide campaign on September 30 to inform the public about the country’s economic situation and its proposals for reviving the ailing economy.

A decision to this effect was made at a meeting of the coalition’s leaders in Minsk on July 22.

As Anatol Lyabedzka, leader of the United Civic Party and a co-chairman of the coalition, told BelaPAN, the United Pro-democratic Forces will apply for permission to hold between 500 and 700 rallies on that day to call for the protection of people’s social rights.

In addition, he said, coalition leaders intend to meet with representatives of factory workers. "It will be interesting to us to hear their opinion of our activities, learn their reaction to the UPF’s anti-crisis proposals. We also plan to discuss the establishment of closer ties between pro-democratic forces and factory workers," Mr. Lyabedzka said.
