American news magazine TIME included ex-presidential candidate and democratic opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya in an annual listicle of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Appearing on the list is often seen as an honour, and Time makes it clear that entrants are recognized for changing the world. The list includes emerging leaders who are shaping the future of business, entertainment, sports, politics, science, health and more. Svetlana Tikhanovskaya became the only representative of the post-Soviet area in TIME 100 Next 2021.

The list of influential individuals is formed either at the suggestion of prominent figures in a particular sphere or by the editorial board of the magazine. Tikhanovskaya was added to TIME 100 Next list by leader of Venezuela’s opposition to the Nicolás Maduro regime Jan Guaido. According to Guaido, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya is an example of resistance and dignity for all those are fighting for democracy in the world.

He noted that Tikhanovskaya’s firm objective, as the voice of Belarus’ opposition, is to ensure that her country holds free, fair and verifiable elections, all political prisoners are freed, and exiles can return. TIME 100 Next also includes actress Anya Taylor-Joy, National Security Advisor to U.S. President Joe Biden Jake Sullivan, and co-CEO of the online broker Robinhood app Vladimir Tenev.

Last year, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya was included in the BBC’s list of the 100 most inspiring and influential women in the world. The publication noted that she headed the democratic movement in Belarus. After the election and the announcement of Alexander Lukashenko as the winner, Tihanovskaya left for Lithuania, fearing for the safety of her children, and continued to lead the democratic movement while “in exile”.
