Belarusian Foreign Minister Uladzimir Makey attended a meeting of the foreign ministers of the member countries of the Eastern Partnership and the Visegrad Group (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia), which took place in Warsaw on April 12.

In his speech, Mr. Makey emphasized the importance of closer cooperation within the Eastern Partnership and the Visegrad Group in the field of transportation and the importance of international financial assistance for the implementation of promising infrastructure projects in the region.

According to the press office of the Belarusian foreign ministry, the foreign ministers discussed preparations for an Eastern Partnership summit in Brussels in November 2017 and the situation in the region.

On the same day, Mr. Makey had a number of bilateral meetings.

In particular, he met with Johannes Hahn, the European Union’s commissioner for the European Neighborhood Policy and enlargement negotiations, to discuss the current state and development prospects of the Belarus-EU dialogue.

In a Twitter message, Mr. Hahn said that he and Mr. Makey talked about human rights and democracy.

Mr. Makey also met with Croatian Foreign Minister Davor Ivo Stier and Romanian Foreign Minister Lazar Comanescu to discuss ways of stepping up cooperation with Belarus in the political and economic spheres.

Mr. Makey and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin discussed the prospects for the development of the Belarusian-Ukrainian dialogue in the political sphere, including preparations for the talks at the highest level.

Messrs. Makey and Klimkin also talked about problems regarding the settlement of the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

According to the press office of the Ukrainian foreign ministry, Messrs. Makey and Klimkin discussed, among other things, preparations for joint events to mark another anniversary of the Chernobyl accident.
