Fionna Gibb, the new British ambassador to Belarus, arrived in Minsk on January 24, the press office of the UK embassy told BelaPAN.
Ms. Gibb succeeds Bruce James Bucknell, who had served as the UK ambassador in Belarus since July 2012 and left Minsk earlier this month.
Ms. Gibb joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1990. According to the FCO, her career has included service as vice consul in Berlin (1992-1995), team leader in Kyiv (1995-1998), deputy consul-general in Basra, Iraq (2008-2009), deputy head of mission in Sana’a, Yemen (2010-2012) and deputy head of mission in Mogadishu, Somalia (2012).
Her most recent position was in London as deputy head of the Projects Task Force, which covered a range of political, security and cultural issues.
“I am most honored to be appointed Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Belarus,” Ms. Gibb said following her appointment. “I look forward very much to working with the Belarusian government and with non-government organizations on a range of issues, including addressing the challenges we collectively face in the pursuit of prosperity, security and human rights in Europe and beyond.”
