The foreign affairs committee of Poland`s Sejm (lower parliamentary house) voted on September 9 to approve the nomination of Janusz Skolimowski as the country`s new ambassador to Belarus.

He may succeed Leszek Szerepka who left the post of ambassador this past August. The embassy is currently headed by Charge d`affaires Michal Chabros.

Mr. Skolimowski was nominated for the position of ambassador by Poland`s then President Bronislaw Komorowski this past April, and his candidacy has reportedly been approved by Belarus.

Mr. Skolimowski`s nomination has yet to be approved by Andrzej Duda, who became Polish president last month.

Mr. Skolimowski, a Soviet-trained diplomat, has recently confessed to cooperation with the secret services of Poland`s Communist government in the late 1980s. He served as Poland`s ambassador to Ireland and Lithuania.
