However, it is up to the Western states to recognize the election or not, the CEC chairperson said.

The Belarusian Central Election Committee’s work is always aimed at the recognition of elections, CEC chairperson Lidziya Yarmoshyna said at a press conference dedicated to the registration of presidential candidates.

"Election recognition is always our goal. But it is up to the Western states and OSCE to recognize them or not,” Yarmoshyna said.

The West has never recognized Belarusian elections since 1996.

Four people have become presidential candidates: leader of the Liberal-Democratic Party Syarhei Haidukevich, representative of the campaign Tell the TruthTatstsyana Karatkevich, Cossack chieftain Mikalai Ulahovich and incumbent President Alyaksandr Lukashenka.
