Belarusian leader speaks against federalization in Ukraine

RFE/RL

Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka has voiced support for Ukraine's territorial integrity and said he "categorically opposed" the federalization of the country.

Speaking on Russia's NTV television channel on April 13, Lukashenka said federalization would "split the country" and eventually "destroy the Ukrainian state."

"I am for a single and unified Ukraine," he added.

Lukashenka also said it was dangerous for Belarus, Russia, and the West to push Ukraine toward federalization.

Pro-Russia protesters in eastern Ukraine have called for the federalization of the country.
