Some 50 veterans of the Great Patriotic War joined members of the "Spravedlivy Mir" (Just World) Belarusian Party of the Left and other opposition parties at a Victory Day ceremony in Minsk on May 9. The crowd laid flowers at the obelisk on Victory Square and held a short rally.
In his speech, Syarhey Kalyakin, leader of the Belarusian Party of the Left, said that opposition activists traditionally paid tribute to those fallen in the 1941-1945 war.
"We are congratulating veterans and thanking them for what they did. They liberated Belarus from fascism. And I think that these people can lead the country to a better future," he said.
The ceremony also was attended by Yaraslaw Ramanchuk, deputy chairman of the United Civic Party.
