Uladzimir Syakerka and another activist of the Belarusian Party of Communists (BPC) were arrested by police in Homyel on Thursday morning while they were distributing a special edition of the party`s newspaper Tovarishch that dealt with Belarus` economic problems.
As Mr. Syakerka told BelaPAN, he and his associate were apprehended near the main entrance checkpoint of AAT Elektraaparatura, an electric equipment company. They were taken to a local police station but were released after a short while.
The activists spent the rest of the day passing out copies of the edition near the Homyel Machine Tool Plant and other factories.
The previous evening, an amount of copies that had been delivered to Kalinkavichy by train were seized by police at the railroad station. In Svetlahorsk, police searched the home of Svyatlana Mikhalchanka, secretary of the local chapter of the BPC.
