Pro-Russian Viktor Yanukovych received the most votes from Ukrainian citizens who went to the polls in Belarus on Sunday to cast ballots in the second round of their country`s presidential election, suggest officially announced results.
Slightly more than 10 percent of eligible voters turned out at the two polling stations set up at the Ukrainian embassy in Minsk and the Ukrainian Consulate General in Brest.
As many as 444 ballots, or 63.51 percent of the total amount, were cast in favor of Mr. Yanukovych at the polling station in Minsk, Volodymyr Shapoval, head of Ukraine`s central election commission, told reporters in Kyiv on February 8. Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko reportedly received 31.18 percent of the vote.
At the polling station in Brest, 349 voters turned out. Of them, 65.9 percent voted in favor of Mr. Yanukovych and 30.9 percent in favor of Ms. Tymoshenko, according to the Ukrainian Consulate General. Mr. Yanukovych appeared on Monday afternoon to have won a narrow victory in the Ukrainian presidential election, according to nearly complete results. With 96 percent of the ballots counted from Sunday’s voting, Mr. Yanukovych reportedly had 48.3 percent, to 46.1 percent for his opponent, Ms. Tymoshenko.
