International Workers Day in Belarus will be held without rallies and processions this year, the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus reports.
1 May rallies and processions were canceled around the country in relation to the epidemiological situation, the press service of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus said.
The situation when May Day celebrations took place without rallies have happened before. In 2016, when Labour Day coincided with Easter, mass processions and rallies were also canceled in Minsk.
“There were celebrations then, but not very active,” the press service specified.
Recall that as of 30 April, 14,027 cases of COVID-19 were registered in Belarus. 2,386 patients have been released from hospitals, 89 people have died.
The WHO also recommends to postpone all mass events, including sports, cultural, political and religious. Experts note that the situation in Belarus is a matter of concern and requires the immediate implementation of a comprehensive blended strategy.
“Belarus has entered a new phase in the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic with community-level transmission, particularly in some parts of the country, including the capital Minsk, Vitebsk city and Vitebsk region,” the WHO experts explained.
Recall that despite the coronavirus pandemic, Belarus won’t cancel celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory. President Alexander Lukashenko stressed that the preparations to celebrate 9 May were in full swing.
Over 3,000 people were expected to take part in the parade. On 30 April, it was reported that Russian and Chinese military won’t come to Minsk to take part in the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory parade.
