The monument to Grand Duke Gedymin of Lithuania was solemnly unveiled on 7 September in the town of Lida, Hrodna region.
The statue depicting the grand duke on the horse was mounted near the Gedymin-built Lida Castle back in August but the official opening was timed with the town's anniversary. The monument's pedestal is made of granite and matches the Lida Castle in color. It also depicts Gedymin's name inscription in the Belarusian language and the Duke's coat-of-arms.
The ceremony was attended by the representatives of the region and city authorities as well as opposition activists. Both the official red-green flags and historical previously banned white-red-white flags could be seen next to each other during the launch.
