The Customs Union is very close to a single currency, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said in an interview with the Russian newspaper Izvestia.
"I think that the Customs Union is very close to the single currency. Only about five years of the concerted monetary and fiscal policy are sufficient. This is advantageous for Russia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus. There is a certainty that levels of the countries' development are similar. They are not going to live off others", Mr. Sargsyan said.
According to him, "the single currency is convenient for economic units and citizens."
"What's the point of having a national currency and lose money during transfers?" he said.
And what do they think in Belarus about the Customs Union's outlook for the single currency? UDF.BY asked the question to Belarusian economist Lew Marholin.
- I would advice Prime Minister of Armenia to count money in his own wallet. It is always good behind somebody else's fence, which cannot be said about people who live in this Customs Union. But somehow, Armenia is not in a hurry to become member of the Customs Union.
I doubt that Prime Minister of Armenia made a serious analysis of the situation of the Customs Union's space.
The single currency in the Customs Union is impossible at the current stage. It is the issue of possibilities. Lukashenka will never give up the right for money emission, otherwise he would have to be content himself with crumbs on a master's table.
Therefore, to talk about the single currency of the Customs Union is not just early, it is pointless.
