Housing construction in Minsk said to have been behind schedule

Housing construction in Minsk was behind schedule in the first nine months, according to the city statistics department.
As many as 11,073 apartments totaling 805,300 square meters were built in Minsk in the period, a year-on-year increase of 2,200 square meters.


Nevertheless, the amount of housing put into operation between January and September was 57.5 percent of the target for 2009, whereas 75 percent had been projected for the period.

Housing construction accounted for 23.4 percent of the fixed capital expenditures in the first nine months.
Almost two-thirds of the housing, 552,300 square meters, was built for people on waiting lists for better housing conditions, 37,000 square meters for families with many children, 11,900 square meters for "social use" and 3,000 square meters for people residing in dilapidated or dangerous buildings.

A total of 49.8 percent of all housing completed in the first nine months were built with individuals' own money, 34.9 percent with bank loans, 7.1 percent with public funds, 6.6 percent with organizations’ own funds, and 1.6 percent with other funds.

Fifteen percent of the housing put into operation in the period was built by small businesses.

There were 117 apartment buildings totaling 1,170,000 square meters under construction in Minsk as of October 1 compared with 115 buildings totaling 1,020,300 square meters as of January 1.
