Belarus Needs to Carry Out Structural Reforms

Belarus needs to carry out structural reforms to boost foreign direct investment, Natallya Kalyadzina, the IMF resident representative in Belarus, told reporters in Minsk on May 13.

If the government carried out deeper and more rapid structural reforms, it would have more prominent opportunities to draw foreign direct investment, she said.

The reforms could increase the efficiency of manufacturing companies and make the economy more competitive, Ms. Kalyadzina said.

"Structural reforms are needed. They stabilize the economy," she said, adding that their absence will only require more profound changes, including unpopular ones, if the economic situation worsens.
