The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BelNPP) has generated a total of 25.4 billion kWh of electricity, Belarusian Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich said ahead of the ministry’s collegium meeting, BelTA has learned.

“In 2023, the ministry’s organizations fulfilled the tasks and met key indicators set by the government, ensured reliable supply of energy resources to businesses and households. The work on renewal of the main production assets of the energy organizations and improvement of the reliability of the energy system continued. Important investment projects for the industry were implemented with the support of the head of state,” Viktor Karankevich said.

According to him, the largest event was the commissioning of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. Since the first power unit was connected to the country’s unified power grid, the plant has generated 25.4 billion kWh of electricity. This made it possible to replace 6.7 billion cubic meters of natural gas.

“The project has become a good stimulus for the growth of electricity consumption in the country - in 2023, this indicator increased by 6.6%, or 2.5 billion kWh compared to 2022 and amounted to 41.1 billion kWh. At the same time, 28.5% of the total volume is provided by the Belarusian nuclear power plant,” the minister said.

In his words, the growth of electricity consumption is provided by both the real sector of the economy and the households, primarily in those areas where incentives have been introduced. These are energy-intensive industries, electric transportation, use of electricity for heating and hot water supply.
