Lukashenko orders to employ all jobless Belarusians by 1 May

Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko instructed the government to solve the problem of jobs for all the unemployed in Belarus by 1 May. The head of state made the statement at the meeting on topical issues of the country’s development on 9 March, the presidential press service reports.
“We have dropout citizens – drunkards, alcoholics, no offense, they are definitely freeloaders. We will use one set of measures to force them to work. But those who have lost their jobs due to misfortune, should get help not only from employment services but from government bodies, too”, Alexander Lukashenko said.
In his view, the registered unemployed have the opportunity to find new jobs.
“They should be, first of all, interested in finding a job. While our duty is to help them. Everyone should get a job by 1 May,” Alexander Lukashenko said.
“Remember: regardless of the place and area I visit my aides will go there first and will publicly invite jobless locals to meet with me. God forbid there are unemployed people after 1 May”, the president added.
According to him, in Minsk “expensive machines” are sometimes used to clean the streets and fulfill other maintanence tasks. Their operation costs greatly exceed the cost of manual labor.
“It is necessary to organize teams of workers who will plant trees, build fences, do painting jobs, sweep streets, dig soil, and so on. Then we will find jobs for everyone”, noted Alexander Lukashenko.
In 2016 the real unemployment rate in Belarus reached 5.8% of the economically active population, according to Belstat.
The official unemployment figure (it includes those who are registered in the employment services) at the beginning of February 2017 amounted to 0.9% of the economically active population.
Last year about 54 thousand new jobs were created in Belarus.
